Many systems were tied to the only game that Riot had published in the last 10 years, League of Legends. In Oct 2019 it was announced that a number of games were upcoming. In preparation we had to deshard player accounts. This meant that usernames needed to be unique and no longer bound to specific regions that players were associated to. This culminated in a series of publishing beats, emails, and ultimately a gating experience that helped players step through a process that made their account globally unique and work for all future games.
